Employee stock plans are offered to employees in four basic formats: employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), a stock option plan, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), and a 401 (k) plan.  There are also additional plans that offer restricted stock or stock appreciation rights (SAR.)
