On Friday, March 14, 2013, a free seminar on veterans’ civic rights will be held at the New Jersey Casino Control Commission office in Atlantic City, New Jersey, located at Tennessee Avenue & the Boardwalk. The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is partnering with the American Legion to sponsor the seminar to make the transition of returning to civilian life easier for those who have served in the military. Veterans, their family members and veteran service organizations are invited to arrive for pre-registration at 10:00 am, with the presentation starting at 11:00 am.
The goal of the seminar is to combat the numerous instances of workplace discrimination that go unreported due to the lack of awareness of the laws in place to protect workers. Military members are not aware that they are protected from being fired, demoted or not being considered for a promotion when they are absent from their job because they are serving in the military. The seminar will explain to military personnel that they are protected under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, as well as the rights of disabled veterans who have experience disability discrimination with regard to their employment, housing and public accommodations.
