EEOC brings Suit Against New York Company for Religious Discrimination

July 1st, 2014

The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a lawsuit claiming civil rights violations against the New York company of United Health Programs of America, and their parent company, Cost Containment Group for forcing employees to practice a self-made religion called, Onionhead.  The spiritual doctrine, created by a relative of the company’s owner, required employees to pray during work hours, give thanks to God for their employment, and to say, “I love you,” to administrators and coworkers.  Several of those who refused to practice the religious requirements were fired.

When one employee protested that the Onionhead doctrines conflicted with her Catholic religious beliefs, she was transferred to another area and was replaced in her office by a large Buddha statue.  When she protested the move claiming that she had been demoted, she alleges she was terminated in retaliation.  Several other employees met a similar fate when they refused to cooperate and participate with the demands of the employer’s religious beliefs.

The EEOC is asking for retroactive pay and damages for the terminated employees, and is seeking an injunction against both United Health Programs of America and Cost Containment Group to prevent any future religious coercion.   According to the EEOC, federal law makes it illegal for a company to force its employees to take part in religious ceremonies or practices.  Doing so is a violation of the employee’s civil and religious rights protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
