Pennsylvania Housekeeper Files Retaliatory Discrimination Lawsuit against Bucks County Employer

A new federal discrimination lawsuit alleges that a former housekeeper for Bucks County’s Peddlers Village was the victim of retaliatory discrimination by her employer.  According to the allegations, the housekeeper was fired after lodging a discrimination complaint with her employer’s human resources department in violation of numerous state and federal laws.

Former Peddlers Village employee Maria Ambel (“Ambel”) began working as a housekeeper for the Peddlers Village Partnership in 2003.  Due to her strong work performance and her ability to train Spanish-speaking employees, Ambel eventually became housekeeping manager.  Ambel alleges that beginning in 2009 she became the target of a workplace discrimination which included a reduction of her work hours, repeated berating and belittling in front of co-workers and a refusal to speak to her.  According to Ambel, the discrimination took place on the basis of her Hispanic ethnicity.

In 2010 and 2011, Ambel filed complaints with her human resources department on the basis of this discriminatory conduct.  The lawsuit alleges that Peddlers Village Partnership failed to investigate her claims and address her concerns.  Without receiving any disciplinary warnings, Ambel was fired on the basis of poor performance reviews.  Ambel recently filed a retaliatory discrimination lawsuit in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania alleging that her employment was terminated in retaliation for voicing her previous discrimination complaints.
