Since North Carolina passed House Bill 2 (HB2) which prevents transgender individuals from using public restrooms that correlate with their gender identity, a growing number of private businesses are speaking out against the legislation. More than 180 companies, including Apple, Starbucks, PayPal and Bank of America, have partnered with transgender advocacy groups and implored North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory to repeal the controversial law.
Many of these companies realize that protecting LGBT rights is not only the right thing to do, but it is also good for business. According to the director of the workplace equality program at the Human Rights Campaign, businesses that actively protect LGBT employees from discrimination are able to attract more talented employees and make more money. Companies that wish to attract and retain high quality employees have recognized the need for LGBT protection in the workplace and responded with LGBT anti-discrimination policies, diversity training programs, and same-sex partner benefits.
