Allegations of racial discrimination have prompted a class action lawsuit filed against Turner Broadcasting, which owns both CNN and TBS. Between 25 and 30 current and former CNN and TBS employees are represented in the lawsuit claiming that company policies and practices prevent black employees from being promoted and from taking action. An internal study revealed disparities in performance evaluation ratings between white employees and black employees, and also showed that black employees are promoted at a much slower rate than white employees. One plaintiff claims he was denied promotions and paid less than white coworkers. Another says she was fired after reporting racial discrimination to human resources.
In a separate lawsuit filed in December 2015, CNN producer DeWayne Walker is also suing the network for racial discrimination claiming he was denied promotions because of his race, and the network retaliated against him after he filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
