A new law in New Jersey prohibits New Jersey colleges and universities from encouraging pregnant students to take a leave of absence and requires institutions to make reasonable accommodations for pregnant students. Under the new pregnancy discrimination law, pregnant students must be allowed extra time to make up exams and be able to maintain a safe distance from hazardous materials.
Graduate students must be given at least 12 months to prepare for and take exams after giving birth or taking a leave of absence due to pregnancy. Graduate students who are caring for a child or a partner must also be permitted extra time to prepare for and take exams.
