The House passed a bill, called the Working Families Flexibility Act, that affects overtime pay for workers. Backed by the Republicans, in this measure, employers would be able to offer their employees paid time off instead of time-and-a-half pay when working overtime at their jobs. The Trump administration is in favor of the bill while Democrats are against it as well as six Republicans who voted against it. Detractors, including the majority of Democratic representatives, opposed the bill because they feel it fails to put workers first since employers will have the final say on when the time off may be used. If this is the case, employees may lose out not only on income but time off, too. Although similar bills have been initiated in the past, no other has been successfully promoted before.
A fair wage is not too much to ask when employees commit to performing their jobs with skill and efficiency, especially if they work extra hours. If a worker works over 40 hours a week at their company, the worker is entitled to time-and-a-half overtime pay at the employee’s hourly rate under the Wage and Hour laws. Although some employees are exempt from the law, employers may fail to follow or be unaware of it and consider workers who deserve the extra pay exempt from the rule.
