Employees at an iconic 100-year-old hotel in New York City recently filed a lawsuit claiming they work in an environment where rampant sexual harassment is common. The six current and former employees, all women, claim that they have endured groping, kissing, and degrading and repulsive sexual remarks on a regular basis from other employees.
Even though employees made complaints to the hotel’s human resources department, they say that the harassment continues. This is despite the fact that the incidents have allegedly happened out in the open, and that at least one incident has been caught on security cameras. In fact, one reported offender is said to have retaliated by undermining the complaining employee in front of fellow employees and customers.
The hotel’s parent company denies that allegations of sexual harassment were ignored, and that it is their policy to take any claims of sexual harassment and discrimination seriously. They also claim that they would not retaliate against staff members who make such allegations in good faith.
One woman who is standing up against sexual harassment through her lawsuit believes she is creating a platform for other women who are afraid to speak up, and she is determined to come forward with them if they choose to stand up for themselves. The woman, who feels she cannot quit her job because she is a single mother, is hoping that some form of justice will come out of her experience.
