You cannot turn on the news today without seeing a news report about sexual harassment in the workplace. While many of the claims are accounts out of Hollywood and within politics, more women in a wide variety of industries are feeling empowered to come forward and reveal their experiences of sexual harassment at work.
Women have experienced sexual harassment at work for decades, yet it has always been underreported. Women may feel ashamed of revealing the situations they endured, worry about losing respect, and fear termination in their industry. With the wide array of new allegations, women are beginning to recognize that they must speak up to make a change. The Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EOEC) receives approximately 15,000 sexual harassment cases every year. Most of these charges are filed by women, but in recent years, complaints from men have more than tripled.
The results of a recent telephone poll regarding sexual harassment are:
- 62% of sexual harassment targets did not act
- 31% of female workers claim to have been harassed at work
- 100% of women claim the harasser was a man
- 7% of men claim to have been harassed at work
- 59% of men claim the harasser was a woman
- 41% of men claim the harasser was another man
