A woman employed at a country club in Hershey, PA has filed suit against the Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, claiming she was fired for reporting the sexual harassment she and fellow employees suffered while working for the company.
The woman, a bartender who was employed at the Hershey Country Club for 10 years, believes she was fired in retaliation after she made numerous complaints to her employer. She claimed that she and other female workers had endured repeated inappropriate sexual comments and touching by club members. The woman further stated that Hershey did nothing about the complaints, and that they cited a $3.45 cash shortage as an excuse for her firing.
Bartenders, waitresses, and others working in entertainment venues are often the victims of sexual harassment. The blend of alcohol and an anything-goes atmosphere may enhance the potential for sexual comments and references, groping, and more. Since the bulk of a server’s income is based on tips, many feel they must endure the harassment. Although they may feel guilty about it, they put up with boorish behavior to avoid losing their tips. When they do report it, many complaints are still brushed aside to stay in good favor with a paying customer.
