New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Signs Equal Pay Act into Law

The New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an equal pay act into law. He announced the signing of the legislation that will close the loophole that prevents equal pay for the same jobs on Wednesday during the parade celebrating the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team’s latest World Cup win. Recently, the team entered mediation with the Soccer Federation to resolve the pay disparity issues.

Governor Cuomo specifically pointed out the accomplishments of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and how the pay gap adversely affects them. Being paid less for the same work is wage discrimination, and so is the promotion of one race or group of employees over another. The signing of the equal pay legislation in New York may lead the way for other states to follow suit.
