A transgender employee who formerly worked for a popular fast food chain in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit on Friday against the company for harassment, hosting a hostile work environment, retaliation, and wrongful termination. The former cashier claims that her managers failed to protect her from derogatory taunts from co-workers and customers and that they ignored her requests to refer to her by her preferred name and pronouns. She alleges that her managers told her to stop using the women’s rest room, which purportedly led to more threats and a shoving incident. A few days later, the manager fired the transgender employee, claiming that she violated the time-off policy by leaving after the previous incident.
Employees expect to be treated with respect at their jobs, no matter what differing characteristics they possess. Unfortunately, transgender discrimination and other types of employment discrimination may occur at various workplaces and traumatize workers who experience it. Victims of discrimination may be subject to demotions, a hostile work environment, or even losing their jobs or never receiving an offer to work for a business in the first place.
