Following months of accusations and an investigation by the state attorney general that found there were disturbing patterns of sexual harassment and a toxic work environment in the office New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, the governor responded to growing public and political pressure and announced Tuesday that he is stepping down.
Gov. Cuomo maintained, in his public statement, that the controversy surrounding him was politically motivated and unfair but it had become a distraction for the state government.
After four months of investigation into several sexual harassment claims against New York Governor Cuomo, New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced her department’s findings last week: Gov. Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women and retaliated against one for going public.
“These 11 women were in a hostile and toxic work environment,” said Attorney General James. “We should believe the women. This investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of conduct by the governor of New York and protocols and procedures were not in place to protect these young women, who believed in public service.”
The attorney general cited instances, including the sexual harassment of a New York State Trooper, which were confirmed by witnesses.
The accusations go back for years. Victims of sexual harassment often stay quiet, fearing loss of their jobs or that no one will believe them.
