The federal Fair Labor and Standards Act requires employers to pay overtime wages to employees who work more than 40 hours per week.  Salaried employees are often exempt from this law.  Employers looking to save money at the expense of their employees may misclassify their employees as salaried so that they do not have to pay them overtime. This type of business practice is illegal and violates the laws of the Fair Labor and Standards Act.
