Diversity in the Workplace Prevents Sexual Misconduct

February 12th, 2018

Philadelphia sexual harassment lawyers assist victims of sexual misconduct and reports that diversity in the workplace can help prevent it.Instead of combating sexual harassment allegations by enforcing policies that forbid unwanted sexual contact in the workplace, employers are doing the best they can to combat unwanted attention and legal matters instead. In many cases, sexual harassment claims are ignored in the courts, as laws against harassment in the workplace are vague, allowing employers to combat sexual assault charges by providing proof that a sexual harassment policy exists.

Preventing Sexual Harassment with Diversity

Company culture and employment policies often suggest that men are more powerful than women. Not only do men typically hold more positions of power in the workplace, but they often earn more than women who have the same qualifications.

Systematic changes in workplace structure may help to combat sexual harassment in the workplace by offering power to a larger and more varied group of people. Increasing the level of diversity in company management may help to generate a power balance, not only between men and women, but between different cultures and backgrounds as well. Furthermore, by restructuring company management systems, employers can ensure that competent leaders are in place that will enforce workplace policies, including those related to sexual harassment and discrimination.

In addition to creating a diverse power balance in the workplace, competent employees need to hold positions of power, including a company’s board of directors, human resource departments, high-level executives, and mid-level managers. Managers and corporate leaders need to be held responsible for actions that may be considered inappropriate if they occur within their department of interest.

Zevin Asset Management argues that gender equality is the starting point for eliminating sexual harassment in the workplace. By diversifying the workplace, not only are employers avoiding discrimination, but they are creating workplace environments that mimic the reality of a multi-cultural society.

A Call for Change

While social media campaigns have helped to create a voice for victims of sexual harassment, the influence of media is a powerful tool in exposing and preventing cases of sexual assault, abuse, and discrimination in the workplace. Victims of sexual misconduct should not be afraid to voice their concerns, as employers are more likely to make changes if the public becomes involved.
