A group of Muslim employees who worked for Ariens Co., a manufacturing company in Wisconsin that makes snow blowers and lawn tractors, recently filed a religious discrimination and retaliation complaint. According to the complaint, Muslim employees are being subject to employment discrimination and denied their right to religious accommodations at the workplace by a new policy that was instituted by the company in January of 2016. The employees claim that the new policy violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act by restricting their breaks and preventing them from being able to pray five times each day at traditional times which is consistent with the Muslim religion.
The religious discrimination complaint was submitted to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The EEOC will investigate the claims and make a decision on how to proceed. The EEOC may attempt to mediate the dispute, decide to litigate the case, or issue the employees who filed the complaint a Notice of Right to Sue Letter which would enable them to file a lawsuit based on religious discrimination claims.
