The New York City Council recently approved legislation that would require businesses with single occupant restrooms to remove “men” and “women” signs, making all single bathrooms in the city gender neutral. An overwhelming majority of council members approved the measure with a vote of 47-2. Mayor Bill de Blasio also signed the legislation which will go into effect on January 1, 2017. The mandate does not apply to restrooms that contain multiple stalls.
