The Democratic National Convention scheduled for July 25 to July 28, 2016 is bound to increase traffic in Philadelphia International Airport. In spite of this, workers at the airport have voted to strike at 461-5. The airport workers attempting to unionize are primarily baggage handlers, wheelchair attendants, and airplane cleaners. These workers are advocating for fair scheduling, clearer terms for sick leave, a better disciplinary system, and the right to unionize.
There have been accounts of retaliation against Philadelphia airport workers advocating for unions in the past. The promise upheld in a fair and well-drafted contract from a skilled Philadelphia employment lawyer would have saved employees from wrongful terminations and employers from costly litigation and an even costlier strike.
While there has been no date set for the strike as of yet, many surmise that it will occur later this month during the Democratic National Convention. Potentially 1,000 workers will leave their posts to strike, which may very well halt airport traffic at a critical time.
