Despite fighting claims in court to prevent its drivers from being classified as employees, Uber has announced its decision to offer drivers access to individual retirement accounts (IRAs) that can be opened directly through the Uber app.
Betterment LLC, a startup robo-adviser valued at approximately $700 million, has teamed up with Uber to offer IRAs to Uber drivers that will be free of fees for the first year. The fee-free IRAs will be available later this year to Uber drivers in New Jersey, Seattle, Boston, and Chicago. Betterment is looking to expand by enticing more freelance workers with IRA options in the future.
