A former Trump Marina employee has been awarded $340,000 by a jury in a disability discrimination lawsuit in New Jersey. After working for the Atlantic City Trump Marina casino for 25 years, the employee was forced to reapply for his job when the casino was bought by the Golden Nugget. Over 80 percent of Trump Marina’s former employees were rehired by the Golden Nugget; however, the plaintiff was denied employment after he filed paperwork requesting workplace accommodations he required after undergoing throat cancer surgery. Radiation had also damaged his throat, and he requested that he be able to keep water with him at all times and be allowed to chew gum as necessary because he had had a salivary gland removed. The plaintiff filed a disability discrimination lawsuit and was awarded $340,000 by a jury in December 2016.
Federal employment laws grant employees the right to reasonable disability accommodations in the workplace. If you or a loved one was fired, denied employment, or denied a promotion because of a disability, you may have a valid discrimination claim against an employer.
