Governor Chris Christie signed a bill into law on Friday that would create specific rights for transgender students that schools would have to follow. The state education commissioner would be required to draft specific guidelines to assist schools in addressing the needs of transgender students, and establish policies that would build a supportive and nondiscriminatory environment within schools for the students. In the legislation, schools would be prohibited from forcing transgender students to use bathrooms or locker rooms that conflict with their gender identity. Furthermore, students would be allowed to dress, and to participate in gym classes according to their gender identity. Schools must also refer to the students by the name and/or pronoun they prefer, whether a legal name change occurred or not. These policies are meant to provide transgender students a safe and comfortable environment in which to exist at school. The law goes into effect on November 1.
Just like at workplaces, schools will now be required to protect the rights of transgender students, and ensure they do not endure harassment or discrimination.
