Transgender Victims of Sexual Harassment and Assault

March 14th, 2018

Philadelphia sexual harassment lawyers fight for transgender victims of sexual harassment and assault.According to a recent report, a shocking number of homosexual and transgender workers have reported a form of mistreatment or harassment on the job. Statistics indicate that half of transgender individuals are abused or assaulted at some point in their lives, and up to 66 percent of survivors may experience sexual assault. The rate may be even higher among transgender subpopulations, such as African Americans. In fact, 11 percent of all hate crimes are directed at transgender people.

These statistics do not bode well for transgender people in the workforce. Right now, reports indicate that 90 percent of transgender workers report some form of harassment or mistreatment on the job. For these victims, the numbers represent a threat to their economic security.

Although homosexuals experience a high rate of discrimination and harassment, it is even worse for the transgender population. The National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force recently released the results of a study that revealed the enormity of the challenge transgender people face in the workplace. Some of the findings include:

  • Forty-four percent were passed over for a job
  • Twenty-three percent were denied a promotion
  • Twenty-six percent were fired because they were transgender

Transgender people are twice as likely as heterosexuals to be unemployed, and four times as likely to live in poverty. That may be because of the pervasive discrimination they face in the workplace.
