Your Right as a Working Mother

March 20th, 2018

Philadelphia employment lawyers advocate for your rights as a working mother.Making the choice to be a parent and have a career is a woman’s right and privilege, but sometimes, it is not a choice at all. Today, two incomes are often needed just to survive, and mothers have no choice but to continue in the workforce. Sometimes, the mother is the sole provider, but it was not always that way.

In the United States during the 1950s, only 19 percent of women with young children had a job outside of the home. By 1967, just 49 percent of mothers stayed home with their children. Today, statistics tell us that 64.4 percent of mothers are breadwinners. Of those, 42 percent either do it alone, or they pull in most of the earnings, and 22.4 percent contribute at least one quarter of the household income.

Despite the large number of working mothers in the workforce, they continue to face discrimination. Research shows that mothers are less likely to be hired, less likely to be perceived as competent, and will earn less than their male counterparts with the same qualifications.
