Despite the prevalence of news stories about sexual harassment and sexual assault in the workplace in recent months, a new study indicates that there is still much confusion about how these offenses are defined among leaders in the Department of Defense. The study also indicated that male senior leaders feel uncomfortable discussing sexual assault prevention.
That is especially shocking news when you consider that the military saw a 10 percent increase in the number of reported cases, compared to last year. Although troops have become more comfortable about reporting sexual assault, service members are becoming more resentful about sexual harassment training. A greater focus on training is needed.
The military aims to better equip commanders and their leadership teams to provide training, and to hone the training to better accommodate case management officials, but it can be a sensitive subject to deal with. That is especially true now as the study shows that male leaders are worried about misspeaking, or that what they say will be misinterpreted. Clearly this is an important topic that the Department of Defense needs to figure out, considering that this year, 5,277 people reported sexual assault during their time in the military, compared to 4,794 last year.
