As the #MeToo movement grips the nation, flight attendants are still struggling with widespread sexual harassment. This revelation is based on interviews with more than 3,500 flight attendants from 29 airlines. It is estimated that approximately 68 percent of flight attendants have experienced some form of sexual harassment during their careers.
The following are additional noteworthy findings:
- Employers have done little to address sexual harassment in the airline industry with 68 percent of flight attendants seeing no effort.
- Unwanted attention included touching, fondling, groping, slapping, kissing, and more.
- Eighteen percent of flight attendants had experienced sexual harassment by passengers in the previous year; while 40 percent had suffered the abuse three or more times.
- Verbal sexual harassment was a problem too, with 35 percent of flight attendants suffering this type of abuse. They had endured lewd, inappropriate, suggestive, and crude comments from passengers, and had also dealt with propositions, requests for sexual favors, pornographic videos, and more.
