#MeToo Issues Positive Change in Non-Profits

January 16th, 2019

Chester County sexual harassment report positive change within non-profits.There is no denying that the #MeToo movement has quite an impact on our society. It has helped numerous organizations address sexual harassment issues that have not been given the time or attention they have deserved. Although corporate America has surely taken a long, hard look at its policies, non-profits are also navigating how to deal with these newly surfaced workplace issues. According to a survey by The Chronicle of Philanthropy and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, one in four women in the fundraising world have been subjected to some form of sexual harassment.

The Significance of Power Inequality in the Workplace

Two-thirds of those who reported such harassment while on the job pointed the finger at donors, while the other one-third of reported misconduct was attributed to colleagues, especially those in senior positions of power. According to the same study, 96 percent of all the harassers are men. Seventy percent of individuals who report being sexually harassed say that the culprit is in a position superior to them.

The landscape of men in high positions of power abusing women without the same level of influence and autonomy is in fact what originally spurred the movement. Clearly this is no different for the non-famous.

Non-Profits Take Different Approaches to Combat Sexual Harassment

Though non-profits lack corporate-like structures, which can make the implementation of new policies much easier, non-profits are able to combat it in meaningful ways that adhere to their social policy and progression. Creative thinking and the establishment of outside partnerships can help develop and empower employees and lead to systemic change.

There are a few approaches to pursue when implementing change. These include:

  • Empowering leadership to partner with other executives to collaborate on creating a safe space
  • Creating an open, honest, and nurturing environment through employee activities
  • Establishing a culture of coaching for progression

Although most organizations use their finances to please stakeholders, investing in employees, leadership, and long-term coaching and communication skills can help create a safe, protective, and empowering work environment, set to create true systemic change. It is important that employees understand and respect one another’s rights. Often, bringing in a third-party consultant or establishing a partnership can contribute to successful transformation.
