Multiple women accused famed opera singer Placido Domingo of sexual harassment and retaliation. Nine accusers came forward to allege that the singer made unwanted physical advances toward them and pressured them into engaging in sexual relationships by offering them jobs. When the women rebuffed his advances, they claim that he retaliated against them and negatively affected their careers. Six other women stated that they felt uncomfortable around him, and nearly 40 other professionals who worked with Placido Domingo claimed that they witnessed the inappropriate behavior many times.
Despite the spate of stories that accuse notable and esteemed professionals of sexual harassment, the problem continues to rear its head in varied industries and among a range of famous and not-so-famous men and women. Sexual harassment should never be acceptable in any workplace, and laws such as the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protect employees from the behavior. Workers may fear speaking up against harassment because they may believe that they will lose their jobs or experience backlash by their employer or coworkers.
