Sidney L. Gold of The Gold Law Firm P.C. is representing a juvenile in a racial discrimination case. The lawsuit, which was filed last week against the St. Dominic Catholic School in Northeast Philadelphia, stemmed from several incidents citing bullying and discriminatory acts against the teenage boy, who is Pakistani and attended the school with his siblings. Although the boy complained to the school about the taunting, school officials failed to address the problem. From that point on, other similar issues arose within the classroom and culminated in a week suspension because of a class project he presented. The former principal also reported the child to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who engaged in an investigation into the family home, revealing that the student was not a threat. Since that time, the family withdrew all five of their children from the school.
Bullying is not acceptable at any time, especially when it escalates into racial discrimination, serious threats, and violence. Schools should be safe havens for every student where learning and positive socialization provide tools that assist the child to grow and flourish. A toxic school environment that allows bullying and discrimination from students and teachers alike, toward individuals of different ethnic backgrounds, hinders growth and the learning process.
