Each holiday season, most take time to give to their loved ones, both with gifts and time spent together. This year, anyone can give back to families that do not have enough to celebrate the holidays. The Salvation Army in the Greater Philadelphia area and Katz JCC in Margate, New Jersey are offering drives for anyone to give back to the community. The attorneys and staff of Philadelphia employment law firm, Sidney L. Gold & Associates, are generously participating in both of these philanthropic events this holiday season.
Those in the Margate area can bring an unwrapped toy for a boy or girl, infant to 18 years old, at any time. Participants are also free to participate in Boxx for Tots classes December 16 and 18 at 7:00 p.m., or December 19 at 12:00 p.m., or the Tots for Tots Kidz Fit Class on December 15 at 4:00 p.m. All classes are free for participation for those who bring a toy.
Last year, the program accrued over 3,500 toys in donations for area children. The collected toys are distributed to charities including Jewish Family Service, The Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) of Atlantic County, Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church of Atlantic City, and directly to local families. The event is being held in the Katz JCC auditorium at 501 N. Jerome Ave in Margate, NJ.
The Salvation Army is asking local families to Adopt-A-Family this year, or give to the Wishing Well. The Adopt-A-Family Program is designed to help those in dire finances have a holiday during the season. Families are selected from The Salvation Army Corps Community Centers, hospitals and referral agencies from throughout Philadelphia. Circumstances for these families in need include death, extreme illness in the family, fire, recent incarceration of a parent, and women leaving abusive homes, among many other situations. Each family gets matched with a sponsor, who buys gifts for every member of the family, including adults.
The Wishing Well is very similar to the Adopt-A-Family program. The key difference is that sponsors can buy individual gifts for specific children, or children in a family. Each family or individual is matched with a sponsor who will purchase gifts for children under the age of 12. The Salvation Army asks that sponsors spend a minimum of $100 per person in the Adopt-A-Family Program, and a minimum of $50 per child in the Wishing Well Program. The foundation also asks that all gifts be delivered to The Salvation Army Eliza Shirley Campus at 4050 Conshohocken Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131 prior to December 17, any time between 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.
